Scootworks partners with Bongo US

On Friday, November 28th 2009, Scootworks joined forces with Bongo International. This now allows our international customers to get our products much more cheaply by using global freight forwarding via BongoUS.

Our international customers can join BongoUS for a very cheap fee (only $5 for one-time use, $15 for permanent use license). They will then receive a "ship-to" address in the USA, thus greatly reducing their shipping costs. We ship to their new US address with conventional domestic shipping, and Bongo forwards the freight in bulk to most every shippable country on the planet. Bongo's international rates are up to 82% cheaper than conventional shipping by UPS, FedEx, USPS, or DHL.

There are links to Bongo on our main page at www.Scootworks.com, in our shopping cart, and on our site at www.scootworks.com/bongo.htm .

We're very excited about the ability of improving our ability to compete in the international marketplace, as well as opening new doors for our global Scootworks Dealer Network.

Pics from Scootworks Bikefest '09

Pics from Scootworks Bikefest '09 - I finally had a chance to sit down, cull through loads of pics from this event in Zebulon NC that different folks took this year, and put them into a slideshow. Some are a bit "washed out" from over exposure, but I tried to pull the best pics together so folks could see all of the different bikes and vendors that were there. You'll see all sorts of machines that were ridden in, plus bike from custom builders and other shops that were set up. Thanks to those who came out for the event, and for those who weren't able to, here's pics for you to look at. The slideshow is at:

January Sale and Update @ Scootworks.com

Scootworks is holding a special sale, in addition to all of the other discounts throughout our site at www.ScootWorks.com and in the store, during the month of January. This is on a number of our exclusive Scootworks parts. Rather than listing everything here, they are displayed on two pages (50 items on the first page, and the balance on the 2nd page). You can find these at:

http://www.shopscootworks.com/productgroups.htm?custom=1 (page 1)

http://www.shopscootworks.com/productgroups.htm?custom=2 (page 2).

There are also links to these sale items on the main page at www.scootworks.com , and at the bottom of the new custom catalog we're building at:
http://www.shopscootworks.com/shop/catalogasset.htm?catalogId=-799 .

UPDATE...

The sale has gone well, and we still have an abundant inventory of select ScootWorks items for reduction, so we've extended the sale a few more days on some of the items listed in the first message above.

We just received a huge supply of risers back from our polisher & chrome shops, and are placing some of them on sale for a short time, beginning sometime this weekend. They will be appended to the end of the sale "page 2", and we'll probably add a "page 3" to the sale lineup.

You can link to these sale pages easily from the front door at www.scootworks.com, you'll find the links in the "BULLETINS" section near the top of the page.

Happy New Year to all!

The Call for Christmas Help was ANSWERED!

Wow... We received an overwhelming amount of response for the help needed at the Yarborough-O’Neal Home in Zebulon. I've pulled a lot of pics, info, and video together from this activity. There's more to come, as we have a Hotdog Dinner on Monday night, and a feast planned for the residents on Christmas Eve. You can see several slideshows, read the background on the events, and see video from the party on Friday 12/19 by going to www.ScootWorks.com and clicking on [Event Photos] in the middle of the page. There's also now a short URL to get there at:

A call for Christmas help...

This is a call for help, if anyone can assist. This time of year, many folks think of Toys-For-Tots, Toy runs, fund raisers for children, help for underprivileged families, and other charities. We just learned of this situation over the last few days…

The Yarborough-O’Neal Home in Zebulon is an assisted living facility. It currently houses 39 elderly women & 18 elderly men. In many ways, these elderly people are just like children…unable to help themselves and have no one and/or no where to turn for assistance. The home gets almost all of their money in exchange for somewhere clean and warm to stay. Earlier in life, these people were professionals, farmers, veterans of foreign wars, have raised families, etc…these are people from all walks of life. Unfortunately, people are often put in (or end up in) homes and seemingly forgotten. Most all of them are cognizant of what is going on around them and very aware that they are left all alone during Christmas (and most other times). This is sad to see, and an all too common miserable existence. Many of these folks have little or no family, and lack even the very basic of items that we all take for granted in daily life…things like Anti-perspirant, handkerchiefs, socks, q-tips, soap, etc. These items are not furnished by the facility, and the individuals generally have so little money that they can’t help themselves with the basics.

Debbie’s father is in this home, we’re out there to visit almost every day, and try to help out where we can. We’ve repaired sunglasses, put batteries in clocks, labeled clothing, found lost items, talked to management about conditions, and even been called to cut a lock off of a cabinet where an elderly lady had accidentally locked her personal possessions in and then couldn’t find the key.

We were talking with the manager and learned, after a Christmas routine of many years, they won’t be able to prepare their annual Christmas dinner for these people this year. Due to budget cuts, personnel cutbacks, most of their suppliers’ donation budgets drying up, and a general lack of funding, they simply will not have the food for it. They usually get donations of a few extra hams and other items for this meal that these folks look forward to, but they have none this year.

Several of the folks at Scootworks are assembling packages and gifts for these people, and we plan to go and spend this coming Friday (12/19) afternoon (around 3pm) with them to celebrate Christmas and life as best as possible. The girls at the shop are preparing snacks and food for the folks at the home. We can’t do much, as 57 adults are a lot of people to provide for, and we’ve been hit as hard as everyone else in the current economy.

The items we’ve already bought for their gift bags are: nail files, tangerines, peppermint candy, butterscotch candy, hand sanitizer, toothbrushes, some toothpaste, deodorant, bath powder, chapstick, and hand lotion.

What I’m asking for is this:
- If any of you know someone in the food industry or grocery store business that might be able to do something to help with their Christmas meal, it would be much appreciated. We’ve made calls to folks we know, but aren’t making progress with donations.

- The men can use simple things like personal hygiene items (soap, shaving lotion, aftershave, q-tips, toothpaste), socks, handkerchiefs, hair combs, more hand cream, nail clippers, etc. Other items are more expensive and up to those donating.

- The women can use simple things like personal hygiene items (soap, perfume, q-tips, toothpaste), hair brushes, nail files & clippers, hair spray, shower caps, cotton balls, hand lotion, etc. Other items are more expensive and up to those donating.

We’d really like to help these elderly people to have a good Christmas. We’re not looking to have them get new TVs and fancy presents, but rather help them have a good Christmas meal and know that the world hasn’t forgotten and passed them by. I understand that everyone is in a bad way this year. Like many of you, we’ve cut way back on Christmas spending, travel, and unnecessary expenses. If you can help ANY at all, or know anyone who can, please email me at wb4iuy @ eastrc . org or call my cell at 919-795-2074. I surely hope none of us ever end up in this situation, maybe we’ll be able to provide for ourselves and have someone who loves and cares for us enough to make our later days pleasant.

Sincerely,
Dave Hockaday

Update: Christmas Parade w/Scootworks

Despite cold weather and high winds,we still had a great turnout. About 42 bikes and a float were in our group. We were entry #30, and there were something like 92 entries in the parade...the largest Christmas Parade in Zebulon, ever.

There's a slideshow of the bikes in the parade, and some pics from parts of the parade at: http://www.scootworks.com/events.htm

There's a video online of the parade, where you can see a condensed version of the parade and some video of the bikes at: http://videos.newsobserver.com/?a=player&id=2514116

Ride w/ Scootworks in the Zebulon NC Christmas Parade!

Christmas Parade Run w/Scootworks in Zebulon NC on December 7th

We've done this in previous years and had the streets filled with bikes. If anyone is interested in running in the Zebulon North Carolina Christmas Parade with Scootworks, we've made arrangements to accept all riders who wish to participate. There's no need to pre-register, just show up and be ready to pull out from Scootworks in Zebulon NC at 12:30p, to head over to the Christmas Parade Lineup.
The parade is Sunday, December 7th. We plan to leave Scootworks in Zebulon NC at 12:30p and head over to the lineup site. They want us to be in place by 1pm, ready to roll by 1:30pm. The parade runs from 2:00 pm to about 3:30 along all of Gannon and Arendell Avenues. We have a pretty good sized group lined up so far, and there's room for more. We'd love to have anyone who wants to hop in and ride this short-but-fun run.

Over 7 MILLION Parts now at Scootworks.com!!

Well, it's been a long time in the works, but the new Scootworks site integration is finally online. We started this gargantuan undertaking this past February, and 2 of us have been writing code non-stop ever since. We are just down the road and receive daily shipments from one of the largest motorcycle parts warehouses in the US. As a result of our long time relationship and annual volumes with them, we were able to negotiate a deal to allow us to handle over 7 million items and provide deep discounts to our customers from our Zebulon facility. We typically stock around 32,000 SKU’s, and knew this would take a lot of work.

If you visit our site you’ll find thousands of new items at great prices. Our new site addition is running pretty good, though we’re still working on lots of things like links to the correct categories, debugging our dual server setup, and such. We’ll be installing dropdown menus to most categories this weekend to hopefully make our menus less intimidating to shoppers. We suspect this will take a few days yet to have up and running as smoothly as we’d like, but we hope the savings we’re passing along will make it worth the aggravation of little quirks you might find along the way.

If you go there and shop around the site, be aware that there are dual shopping carts at this time. We’re working on an application to merge those automatically (and transparently) for the customer, but don’t worry. Just select whatever items you like, and when you’re ready to check out, read the bold red instructions in the cart…it’ll walk you though the simple process.

There are load of new deals in the works…we’re working on something with Helmet House right now, that should make for a sweet deal for deep discounts to our customers on all of their product lines as well. We’re building our in-house inventory even larger, for what we hope will be the best upcoming riding season ever!

Go to www.scootworks.com and click on [Shop Online] or the Warehouse Gateway image in the middle of the page and check it out. If you have any problems or questions during this debug phase, please drop me a note to support @ scootworks . com .

Code for our new line of footpegs is being written now, and will be posted soon. The pegs are also already in stock and available upon request. One additional feature of these grips and pegs is the ability to utilize all Kuryakyn peg & grip accessories... Throttle boss, stilletto tips, fringe, stirrups, and more! New Bushing for Scootworks Lowering Kit Users

Some users of the Scootworks EN500 Lowering Kit have reported their newer bikes (seem to be mostly '07+) sometimes had the metal insert glued/vulcanized into the factory bushing in the lower shock eye. This makes it difficult or impossible to remove for use with the Scootworks lowering kit. We obtained several from Kawasaki, and found that some of them (randomly) were also glued/vulcanized in.

We are now manufacturing double-tapered replacement bushings to include with all of the 500 lowering kits, in the event this happens to be the case with a customer's bike. If any of you have experienced this and need bushings, please contact me at support @ scootworks . com or call 919-269-0986 x32 and I'll have a set sent out to you. I don't get much time to get on the forums this time of year, so email or phone is the best way.

Scootworks Machine Shop Video...

We're working on several videos to outline the actual manufacturing process behind the hundreds of parts we make at Scootworks. Here is a short clip Chris put together while he was experimenting with the cameras, software, placement around the machinery, etc.
It's the first video, called Demo Reel 1:

http://vimeo.com/1727319

You might find it best to start the video and then pause it, to allow it to load and buffer. Also, if your computer plays it "jerky", click the "HD-on" logo in the top RH side of the picture (when your mouse is over the video) to turn "HD-off".

Though short, you'll see a batch of 750 Honda belt drive preload caps, a pic of some of the controls and tooling from the VM3 4-axis CNC mill, the final manual burnishing of the fork pivot for our raked triple trees, a VN800 rear pulley coming off of the SL-10 CNC lathe, some shots of the VLX lowering kit from inside of the VM3, a close-up shot of our new through-tool cooling, our robotic tool changer in action, and other things.

There will be several detailed "How It's Made" videos coming in the next few weeks, so keep an eye on http://www.scootworks.com/ to see the action from behind the scenes at Scootworks.
